China bashing is nothing new during the US presidential campaigns.CRI"s Washinton correspondent Xiaohong is asking Americans what they really think about their relationship with China.American writer Zachary Karabell says there are two prominent phenomena during the presidential campaign – firstly, candidates attacking each other instead of proposing real solutions - and secondly, China bashing. In fact, some Americans say they don"t quite understand the reasons behind this political rhetoric."I would say it"s pretty common if you look at the past elections for a while, candidates are running to be very tough on China attitude. I"m not sure why exactly. ""I don"t agree with them on some of the things they said about China, like they"re cheating or they are stealing American jobs. It helps our economy and their economy. So whenever I see these ads and anything like saying China is so bad, I really don"t understand why they keep promoting that. And it still confuses me."The issue around manufacturing jobs obviously tops the agenda of this year"s China bashing.Former US ambassador to China Stapleton Roy says most of the talks don"t reflect what really happens."We have been losing jobs for 50 years as our economy has shifted from being a manufacturing economy to increasingly a service-oriented economy. We haven"t just lost jobs to China, but to a host of countries. China"s economic growth is basically good for jobs in the United States. It supports vibrant US exports to China. President Obama has set a goal of increasing our export by 15%, only in the case of China can we reach that target. There are 435 congressional districts in the United States. 420 of them exports to China exceeded our exports to any other foreign market."Numbers from the U.S.-China Business Council suggest that US exports to China have increased over 500 percent since the year of 2000, while during the same period the country"s exports to other countries and regio ons only increased by 80 percent. Also the Republican candidate Mitt Romney says he will label China a currency manipulator the day after he takes the office.US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner disagrees with Romney"s arguments."China presents a very complicated mix of opportunities and challenges for the American economy today. But our exports to China over the last three years have been growing very very rapidly. China has let the exchange rate appreciate by roughly 13% against the dollar in real term in a short period of time."外语学习Most Americans believe relations between the two countries will not be affected by the anti China rhetoric during the campaign. For CRI, I"m Xiaohong.
